Stonebridge Park

You'll find Stonebridge Park sitting quietly on the outskirts of Hull, a proper slice of green that feels worlds away from the city. The reserve centres on a series of ponds and wetland areas where water birds genuinely thrive - cormorants, grebes, the lot. Bring binoculars if you're serious about spotting things; casual visitors do fine with just their eyes and a bit of patience.

It's a walker's park rather than a sit-about-in-the-sun sort of place. The paths are manageable, threading through reed beds and past open water, and you can knock out a decent circuit in forty minutes to an hour. Birdwatchers will spend considerably longer, obviously. The reserve gets properly interesting in spring and autumn when migrating species pass through - winter brings its own rewards if you don't mind the cold.

Families with older kids who can handle a proper walk will get something genuine from it. Younger children might find the lack of obvious attractions a touch dull, and there's nowhere to play or splash about. If the weather turns, there's little shelter, so come prepared.

Stonebridge works best as a morning or late-afternoon detour rather than an all-day destination, but it's free, it's local, and if birds interest you at all, it's proper worth the visit.
