Stone Pit Wood

The woodland around Stone Pit Wood, just east of King's Lynn, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a working woodland that's been logged and managed for generations, so don't expect pristine primeval forest. What you get instead is something more honest - regenerating trees, the smell of damp earth after rain, and genuine quiet. The pit itself is where clay was once extracted, leaving behind a small depression that's now part of the woodland floor.

It's brilliant for walkers who want something low-key without the postcard crowds. You won't find facilities or marked trails - this is proper countryside, not a visitor attraction with a gift shop. Allow an hour or so to wander through, though you could stretch it longer if you're the type to sit on a log and listen to birds. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming after twenty minutes; there's nothing to climb on or interactive about it. History types will appreciate the industrial heritage, though there's not much interpretation on site.

Based near King's Lynn, you're well positioned if you're staying at Range Farm Glamping or Dreamy Hollow Woodland Campsite - both within three miles. Wild Meadow Glamping is a slightly longer drive but still accessible. It works best as part of a wider Norfolk walk rather than a destination in itself. Spring and autumn are your best bets weather-wise; winter can be muddy and rather grey.
