You won't find gift shops or car parks here - just Bronze Age stones scattered across moorland above Aberystwyth. The stone circle and round cairns at Hirnant sit roughly 4,000 years into the past, weathered monuments that archaeologists reckon were burial sites for important people. The circle itself is modest by some standards, a handful of upright stones arranged in rough formation. But that's rather the point. Walking out here, you get the sense that you've genuinely stumbled on something, not that it's been packaged for tourists.

The real appeal is for walkers with a bit of archaeological interest. Kids under ten might find it dull - there's no interpretation, no drama, just old rocks on a hillside. But if you're camping nearby at Forester's Retreat Glamping or Aber Camping and fancy a proper walk with a genuine historical payoff, it's worth the leg-stretching effort. The approach winds through typical mid-Wales moorland: bog, bracken, and that particular silence you only get at height.

Access appears to be free and open year-round, though there's no formal visitor infrastructure whatsoever. Allow an hour or two depending on pace and how much time you spend standing about imagining Bronze Age burials. It fits nicely into a wider walking itinerary in the Ceredigion hills - the kind of holiday where you're combining several smaller sites rather than banking everything on one headline attraction. Best visited in decent weather; coming here in mist defeats the purpose entirely.
