Stockdale Plantation

The forest here is dense and properly quiet - the kind of place where you actually notice birdsong instead of fighting to hear it over crowds. Stockdale Plantation sits just outside Kendal, a working woodland that doesn't feel like it's been landscaped within an inch of its life. You're walking through genuine mixed woodland, not a manicured theme park version.

There's a decent network of paths threading through, ranging from gentle loops suitable for families with younger kids to longer trails that'll give proper walkers something to do for a couple of hours. The ground can be muddy depending on weather - bring boots rather than trainers and you'll be fine. In autumn it's worth the trip just for the colour, though it's pleasant enough in spring too.

This works well as part of a broader exploration of the Lake District's green spaces. If you're based at The Ashes Caravan Park or Two Acre Glamping Pods - both within five or six miles - you've got an easy afternoon option when the mountain weather turns sketchy. Little Acre Holiday Park is similarly close.

The plantation rewards a slow pace more than a quick circuit. Bring a flask, find a decent viewpoint, and spend an hour doing nothing much. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's exactly what a forest should be - somewhere to breathe and walk without needing to book tickets or plan around opening hours. Free, unrestricted access and that's rather the point.
