Stock Wood

The woods south of Maidstone are proper woodland - the kind where you actually feel like you've left town behind, even though the ring road is only a few minutes away. Stock Wood is dense, well-walked, and genuinely pleasant for a couple of hours if you've got families keen on scrambling about in the undergrowth or just need to blow off some steam.

It's broadleaf forest mostly, the sort of place where the paths are well-trodden enough that you won't get lost but muddy enough that it feels like real woodland rather than a municipal park. You'll see bluebells in spring if you time it right. The canopy is thick enough that it's properly cool on warm days, which matters more than you'd think when you've got kids in tow.

Historically nothing jumps out as significant - this is just old Kent forest, the kind that's probably been here for centuries in roughly the same form. That's not a criticism. Sometimes you just want trees and space without the heritage layer.

It works well as a morning or early afternoon stop if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Chegworth Mill Glamping and Bearsted are both close enough for an easy drive. You won't need more than ninety minutes here unless you're the type to sit on a log and think about life for an hour, and the free admission is obviously a plus when you're already paying for accommodation. Go when it's not raining hard; the paths get genuinely boggy otherwise.
