Stob nan Eighrach

The climb up Stob nan Eighrach rewards you with views across the Arrochar Alps that justify every step. This isn't a gentle ramble - it's a proper hill walk that demands respect, rising steeply from the village of Arrochar in Argyll and Bute.

You're looking at roughly 2.5 hours up and the same back down, depending on fitness. The path climbs through bracken and heather, with sections steep enough to use your hands. Once you're at the summit, the panorama opens out across Loch Long and towards Ben Lomond. On a clear day the visibility is excellent.

It's best suited to walkers with mountain experience rather than casual hikers. Families with older teenagers who've done hill walks before will manage it fine, but young children won't enjoy the constant gradient and rough footing. Spring through autumn is ideal - winter conditions require proper kit and navigation skills.

Staying at Beinglas Campsite puts you within three miles and means you can tackle this early in your trip without rushing. Loch Lomond Holiday Park is equally convenient if you prefer full facilities. Both give you base camps for exploring the wider Arrochar area, where Cobbler and Ben Arthur are nearby alternatives if you want different terrain.

Water and waterproofs are non-negotiable. The weather changes fast in these hills, and exposure at the summit leaves you vulnerable. Well worth the effort though - this isn't a crowded tourist spot, and that's exactly why it works.
