Stob Hill

Stob Hill rises above the rolling countryside near Maybole with genuine purpose - this isn't some gentle knoll, but a proper climb that rewards decent effort. The walk up takes you through moorland and grassland with increasingly broad views across South Ayrshire spreading out below. On a clear day you can see right across the Lowlands, which makes the huffing and puffing worthwhile.

It's the sort of peak that appeals to walkers wanting something more substantial than a stroll but without needing specialist kit or a full day's commitment. The landscape here feels surprisingly wild given how close you are to civilisation - wind-swept grass, open sky, the kind of exposure that makes you feel properly outdoors. Most people can manage it in under two hours return depending on fitness, though the final push gets steep.

Visit in autumn when the light's at its best and the midges have buggered off. Spring works too, though the ground can be boggy. Summer's busy and surprisingly muggy for somewhere so exposed.
