Stob Coire Sgreamhach

It's a proper mountain that demands respect, rising to 1,027 metres in the Mamores range near Ballachulish. Most walkers approach it via the Glen Nevis visitor area, tackling it as part of the wider Mamores ridge, though it can be done as a standalone peak if you're confident with navigation and the weather holds.

This is one for hillwalkers with solid experience, not beginners. The ascent is relentless, steep in places, and the name references the wind that funnels through the corrie - you'll understand why when you're up there getting buffeted about. On a clear day the views across Glen Coe and towards Ben Nevis are outstanding. In cloud, it's grim and featureless; in bad weather, it's genuinely dangerous.

Allow five to seven hours for a round trip from the car park at Glen Nevis visitor centre. You'll need proper boots, a map, and ideally a compass. It's free to walk, obviously - just park sensibly and respect the landscape. August and September offer the best weather windows, though the Scottish Highlands are unpredictable year-round.
