Geàrr Aonach

The walk up Geàrr Aonach isn't long, but it demands respect. This peak sits just above Ballachulish, rising sharp and sudden from the glen floor with views that punch well above its modest 2,500-foot height. Most people tackle it as part of the Three Sisters traverse - the trio of mountains that dominates the Glencoe landscape - but it works perfectly as a standalone half-day walk if you've got sore legs or limited time.

The approach is straightforward enough: park near Ballachulish and follow the path that heads toward the Three Sisters range. Geàrr Aonach is the shortest of the three, and that's precisely why it appeals. You'll gain the summit in roughly two hours, with proper scrambling on the final push - nothing technical, but you'll use your hands. The payoff is outstanding: the entire Loch Leven spreads beneath you, and on a clear day the peaks across Glencoe are properly spectacular.

Hill walkers and families after a proper Scottish mountain experience without committing to a full day should come here. It's genuinely worthwhile. Bring waterproof trousers; the approach can be boggy early on. Allow three to four hours return, more if you're not rushed. Free, obviously - it's a mountain.

The nearby campsites make this an ideal spot for a few days exploring the area. Red Squirrel Campsite is just down the road and highly rated, while Invercoe offers more facilities if you've got a caravan. Neither spoils the wild mountain feel of the place.
