Beinn na Caillich

The walk up Beinn na Caillich rewards you with proper Highland views across Loch Leven and back towards the Ben. It's a straightforward hill rather than a technical climb - you're looking at roughly two to three hours up and down from Ballachulish, depending on your fitness. The path itself is well-trodden and starts fairly gently before steepening as you push for the summit cairn at around 2,500 feet.

This one's ideal for walkers who want genuine views without needing ropes and scrambling experience. On a clear day the perspective across the loch is genuinely excellent, and you get a real sense of how the mountains stack up in this part of the Highlands. Kids aged ten plus would manage it fine, though the final push is a bit relentless and the descent can be tough on the knees.

Timing matters here. Early start beats the midday crowds, and frankly the light is better in morning anyway. Weather changes fast in these hills, so check conditions before heading out - waterproofs aren't optional. Free to climb, obviously. It slots brilliantly into a wider exploration of the area. You're minutes from Ballachulish itself, and the various campsites around here - Blackwater Hostel and Red Squirrel Campsite are both close enough for a morning outing. Glen Nevis is slightly further but still doable as a base if you want more climbing options in the region.
