Stob Coire nan Lochan

Getting to the summit of Stob Coire nan Lochan takes proper effort - it's a relentless push up through Glen Coe - but the views from 1,100 metres make every step worthwhile. You're looking down into the corrie itself, that dramatic bowl of rock and scree, with the Three Sisters sprawling out below you like something from a fantasy film.

This is a serious walk, not a casual amble. Most people allow four to five hours for the round trip from the Glen Coe visitor centre car park. The terrain gets steep and rough higher up, with scrambling over boulders near the summit. Families with young children will find it tough going, and anyone without proper hill-walking experience should think twice about attempting it in poor weather - visibility can vanish fast up here.

What makes it special is the isolation. Unlike Ben Nevis or other honeypot peaks, you won't be queuing at the summit. The walk itself rewards those who take it seriously - switchbacks through heather, then the final push across exposed ridge. On a clear day, you can see across to Ben Nevis and down towards Glencoe village.

If you're camping locally, Red Squirrel Campsite is only 2.3 miles away near Ballachulish - proper convenient. Invercoe, just 4.1 miles out, works too. Save this walk for when you've got your legs under you and the forecast looks decent. It's not the tallest peak in the area, but it's absolutely one of the most rewarding.
