Stob Coire Creagach

The climb up Stob Coire Creagach demands respect. This is a proper mountain, not a gentle hillside ramble, and at 884 metres it commands views across Argyll that justify every heavy step. The walk from Cairndow takes you through Glen Kinglass, where the valley floor opens up and the peak reveals itself gradually - a jagged profile that looks considerably steeper than the maps suggest.

Most people tackle this as a day hike, typically allowing four to five hours for the round trip depending on fitness. The terrain is rough underfoot and exposed in places, so it's not a one for novice walkers or young children. But if you're comfortable on Scottish hills and fancy something with real substance without needing technical climbing skills, this delivers.

The real reward sits at the summit. On a clear day you're looking down Loch Fyne towards the Cowal peninsula, with the Arrochar Alps doing their best to steal the show across the glen. It's windswept up there - bring layers you can actually use, not just for show.
