Stirley

Stirley sits on the edge of the Pennines near Holmfirth, a proper moorland landmark that punches above its weight if you're after a decent walk with some height gain. On a clear day you can see for miles, which is exactly why people bother trekking up here rather than settling for the flatter routes nearby.

The real appeal is the walking. Stirley works well as part of a longer circuit through the moors, or a standalone push if you've got a couple of hours free. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a slog depending on fitness levels. The terrain's moorland throughout - bog underfoot in wet weather, which happens often enough in this part of Yorkshire that you should plan accordingly.

If you're camped at Holme Valley or Secret Valley Escapes, both within a few miles, this makes a natural morning or afternoon outing. The nearby parks are well-positioned for exploring this stretch of the Pennines, and Stirley connects you to bigger walking networks if you fancy expanding your range. It's free to visit and there's no formal infrastructure, so you're essentially parking up and going - no opening hours to fret about. Allow two to three hours depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. Worth the detour if you're in the area and keen on hills; skip it if you're after something gentler.
