Stirk Hey Wood

A proper woodland walk just a few miles outside Preston, Stirk Hey Wood is the sort of place locals know about and visitors often miss. You're looking at mixed woodland - decent-sized trees, a network of paths that wind through without too much fanfare, and the kind of quiet that actually feels quiet compared to the sprawl of Lancashire's towns.

The walk itself is straightforward enough. No dramatic viewpoints or dramatic anything, really - it's about being under the canopy, spotting whatever birds are about, and getting some air in your lungs without needing a map and a packed lunch. Families with young kids will manage it fine; it's not taxing. History buffs won't find much to grab onto here. This is pure woodland walking, and honestly, that's rather the point.

Timing-wise, you could easily spend an hour here, maybe two if you're meandering. It won't feel too crowded even in decent weather. If you're staying at Claylands Caravan Park or Gibsons Barn just down the road, or camping further out at Moss Wood or Brickhouse, this makes a decent morning or afternoon leg-stretcher rather than a full day out.

Free to walk around, naturally. No facilities that I could trace, so bring water. It's the sort of spot that earns its place in a park holiday as the quiet interval - the bit where you're not queuing for anything, just walking through trees.
