Stiperstones

The ridge feels properly wild once you're up there. Stiperstones is a jagged limestone spine running north-south across south Shropshire, and the walk to the summit takes you through moorland that feels a world away from the Shrewsbury suburbs. The highest point sits at 1,763 feet, crowned by a trig pillar and piles of raw stone - not manicured, not gentle, just honest upland.

You can tackle this from several angles depending on how ambitious you're feeling. The approach from the car park at the southern end is straightforward enough, a steady climb through heather and bilberry. The views across the Welsh Marches unfold as you gain height. On a clear day you're looking at the Brecon Beacons and beyond. On a grey day (which is most days up here) the moorland gets properly atmospheric, which has its own charm.

Walkers will love this. It's not a trudge round a managed peak - there's actual scrambling involved on the exposed ridge, loose stone underfoot, wind that can genuinely throw you around. Families with young kids should be realistic about what this demands. Expect two to three hours minimum for a proper circuit.

Stiperstones sits well within striking distance of several holiday parks - Brow Farm Campsite is just 2.5 miles away, making this a proper option for campers based in the area. Sunrise Pods and Green Caravan Park are equally close by, so you could base yourself locally and tackle the ridge as part of a wider walking week. The nearest town of Shrewsbury is about fifteen miles north, useful for supplies and an evening out.
