Pole Bank

Hitting 1,201 feet above sea level, Pole Bank commands proper views across the Shropshire countryside that'll make the climb worthwhile. This is the highest point on the Long Mynd, part of the ancient plateau that stretches south from Shrewsbury, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Welsh mountains.

Walkers will love the approach - there's no single route up, so you can pick your poison from various footpaths that wind through heather moorland and bracken. The summit itself is marked by an Ordnance Survey trig point, though don't expect dramatic rocky outcrops. It's more about the sweeping panorama than Alpine drama.

Families with older children who enjoy a good yomp will find this rewarding, though little ones might struggle with the distance and terrain. The paths can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential.

From a holiday base at one of the nearby parks like Mountain Edge Shropshire or Green Caravan Park, Pole Bank makes an excellent half-day adventure. Church Stretton sits just to the south, making it easy to combine with a proper lunch and maybe some shopping. Allow three to four hours for the round trip, depending on your starting point and how long you linger at the top taking in those views.
