The Stewartry Museum sits right in Kirkcudbright, a town that feels genuinely frozen in time - all Georgian architecture and artists' studios tucked into narrow streets. Inside, you get a proper local history museum: the kind where someone has cared enough to arrange objects properly rather than just dump them in cases. Roman finds, medieval bits, household objects that tell you how ordinary people actually lived. There's a decent collection of maritime material, which makes sense given Kirkcudbright's harbour, and some substantial information on the area's agricultural past.

It's best suited to people who like turning things over slowly - archaeologists, local history types, anyone interested in how rural Scotland developed. Kids might engage for 45 minutes if there's something hands-on, but it's not a playground. The museum is genuinely free, which is proper value, and most visitors spend between an hour and 90 minutes here. Go mid-week if you can; weekends draw enough folk that the small rooms feel crowded.
