About Steng-a-Tor
It's the kind of summit that rewards walkers without punishing them. The terrain is boggy in places, especially after rain, so decent boots matter more than fitness. The actual tors - those distinctive granite outcrops that dot Dartmoor - look dramatic up close, all weathered stone and surprising vertical drops. Kids will find plenty to scramble on, though you'll want to keep an eye on them near the edges.
Allow two to three hours return from the car park, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The walk itself takes about 45 minutes each way if you're moving steadily. There's no café up there, so bring a flask and snacks.
If you're basing yourself at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park, this is absolutely worth the short drive. It's far less crowded than some of Dartmoor's better-known peaks, which is precisely the point. On a decent morning, you'll have the moorland mostly to yourself. The light changes constantly across the granite - worth catching at different times of day if you can manage it.
