Starting Ring

You won't find coaches queuing at Starting Ring, and that's precisely why it matters. This Iron Age hill fort sits on high ground near Oxford, commanding views across the Oxfordshire countryside - the sort of place where you can actually think about what life was like two thousand years ago without fighting through crowds.

What you're looking at is a roughly circular earthwork, the defensive rings and ditches that once protected an ancient settlement. It's not dramatic in the way Stonehenge is dramatic, but there's something affecting about standing on the ramparts and realising people chose this spot specifically because they could see trouble coming from miles away. The earthworks are still clear enough to read the landscape's story, even if the defensive wooden palisades are long gone.

This is genuinely a spot for walkers and history types rather than young kids - there's no visitor centre, no interpretive boards, no café. You'll need a decent map or GPS to find it, and you'll want to allow perhaps forty minutes to walk the perimeter and absorb the place properly. The nearest town is Oxford, which means you're well-placed to combine this with bigger attractions if you're staying longer than a day.

Both are roughly five miles away - near enough to pop out for an afternoon's exploring, far enough that you're genuinely in the countryside.
