Stanway House & Fountain

The fountain at Stanway is one of those things that makes you stop dead on the village green. Built in the 1630s, it's the tallest gravity-fed fountain in Britain - water shoots up to 300 feet with no pumps, just physics and a rather brilliant design. The house itself is a proper Jacobean manor, all golden stone and mullioned windows, the sort of place that makes you understand why the Cotswolds gets under people's skin.

You're looking at a working family home, not a museum, which means the atmosphere feels lived-in rather than sterile. The fountain is the real showstopper - watching it in action is genuinely impressive, though it only runs on certain days (worth checking ahead). The gardens are pleasant enough for a potter about, and there's enough history in the buildings to occupy someone with a real interest in 17th-century architecture for a decent hour or two.

Families with young kids might find it a bit thin for a full afternoon; once you've seen the fountain and wandered the grounds, you're done. But if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Winchcombe or Broadway are both well-regarded - it's absolutely worth the short drive from Tewkesbury. Pair it with a village walk and lunch nearby, and it becomes part of a proper day out rather than a standalone tick-box. History enthusiasts will get more mileage out of it than casual visitors.
