Stantons Farm - Petting Farm

Stantons Farm is a working petting farm just outside Braintree where you can get up close with animals - the sort of place where kids genuinely light up when they're feeding goats or stroking rabbits. It's hands-on in the best way: no glass barriers, no queues, just you and the animals in a proper farmyard setting.

This is squarely aimed at families with younger children. Under-eights will spend a good hour or two here without complaint. Older kids might find it brief unless they're genuinely keen on animals, but the novelty of a working farm environment keeps most entertained for a solid visit. Adults often underestimate how tiring it is for small kids to be constantly petting and feeding creatures, so expect them to sleep well afterwards.

I'd recommend going mid-week if possible - weekends can get rammed with school groups and birthday parties. Morning visits tend to be calmer. Bring old clothes because you will get dirty, and take extra cash for animal feed, which drives the whole experience.

If you're staying at Stocks Farm Camping or Golden Grove just down the road, Stantons makes an excellent half-day outing when the weather's reasonable. Gosfield Lake Resort, five miles away, is bigger and more resort-focused, but Stantons feels more genuine and less corporate. It pairs well with a quieter park-based holiday where you want one proper attraction rather than a packed itinerary.
