Stanley Mathews Statue

There's a bronze statue of Stanley Matthews outside the Britannia Stadium in Stoke-on-Trent, and it's one of those things that only really hits you if you know the story. Matthews was a footballer of genuine legend - played until he was nearly 50, won an FA Cup final in his prime, and became something of a national treasure. The sculpture itself is straightforward: a footballer captured mid-stride, permanent and dignified.

Honestly, it's not somewhere you'd build a day around. Five minutes and you've seen it, taken a photo perhaps, maybe read the plaque if you're interested in the detail. But if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Luzlow Caravan Site is just over three miles away, or you could splash out on the glamping at Holly Grove Farm if you want something with more appeal - it's an easy addition to a local walk through Stoke.

Football fans will get something from it. Kids less so, unless they're genuinely into the sport or you spend time explaining why he mattered. It's the sort of thing you'd include if you're doing a proper tour of the Potteries rather than as a standalone visit. The stadium itself is modern and unremarkable from the outside, so you're really just paying respects to a plaque and a statue in what amounts to a car park.

Stoke's worth a proper visit for the pottery heritage and the actual museums in town, but this particular spot? It's five minutes out of your way if you're in the area.
