St Winnow Church

The walk to St Winnow Church from Lerryn is actually the thing worth doing here. You'll descend through proper woodland, following a footpath that drops down to the River Fowey - it's a lovely ramble that takes about twenty minutes each way. The church itself sits at the bottom, squeezed between the riverbank and a steep hillside, which immediately explains why it's so quiet and why you've probably never heard of it.

Inside, there's nothing flashy. Medieval stonework, a few bits of stained glass, the usual ecclesiastical furniture. What makes it memorable is the setting - water lapping at the churchyard wall, that sense of being at the absolute end of somewhere. You could sit on a bench overlooking the river for half an hour and hear almost nothing but birds. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow visit rather than a quick tick-box job.

History buffs will note the Norman architecture. Families with young kids might find the walk itself more engaging than the church - the path is good but steep going back up. Most people allow an hour round trip from Lerryn. Admission appears to be free, though do check before you go as information online is patchy.

If you're based at one of the holiday parks around Par Sands or Eden Valley, St Winnow makes an easy afternoon outing. You're only a few miles away, and it breaks up a park holiday nicely. Walk, sit, eat a sandwich, walk back. No queues, no entrance fees, no nonsense.
