St Vigeans Nature Trail

The path winds through woodland thick enough that you genuinely lose sight of the car park within minutes. St Vigeans Nature Trail, just outside Arbroath on the Aberdeenshire coast, is the sort of walk that rewards you for showing up without demanding much in return.

It's mostly gentle forest trails threading through mixed woodland - beech, oak, conifer - with enough variation that it doesn't feel repetitive. The trail loops around, taking somewhere between 45 minutes to an hour depending on how often you stop to identify birds or just breathe properly. There's a stream at one point and occasional glimpses of the surrounding countryside, though don't expect dramatic vistas.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's genuinely pleasant rather than spectacular - the kind of place you'd actually return to rather than tick off a list. Families with younger kids will manage it fine; the paths are well-maintained enough that buggies might work on the main loop, though you'll need proper shoes. Birdwatchers could spend longer picking out woodland species.

The real pull is proximity. If you're staying at The Grange Glamping just down the road - that's a proper spot with animals and proper facilities - this becomes your daily walk rather than a planned outing. Free, no barriers, no visitor centre faff. Just turn up. The Arbroath seafront is close by if you want bracing coastal air afterwards, which makes for an easy morning combining both. Don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip. Expect it to be exactly what you needed that day.
