St Symphorian

The parish church of St Symphorian sits on the edge of Bodmin, a solid Norman structure that most visitors drive straight past without a second glance. Inside, it's worth stopping for - there's a decent font, some proper medieval stonework, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how few people actually step through church doors these days.

It's the sort of place walkers heading to or from Bodmin Moor will appreciate more than casual tourists. If you're doing the moorland trails, ducking in here gives you a chance to catch your breath and see what passes for local history in a market town that's frankly seen better days. The church itself isn't going to hold your attention for more than twenty minutes unless you're seriously into ecclesiastical architecture, but that's not really the point.

Free to visit, naturally. No admission fee, no gift shop pressure. Get there early morning or late afternoon if you want it to yourself, which you probably will.

If you're based at Pencuke Farm Holiday Cottages a few miles away, or one of the other parks round here, St Symphorian works as a gentle hour's excursion into town rather than a dedicated day out. Combine it with a proper walk on the moor, a pint in Bodmin itself, and you've got a decent half-day sorted. It's functional rather than unmissable, but perfectly adequate for what it is - a working parish church that's been there since the Normans bothered to build it.
