St Stephen's Church, Old Radnor

The graveyard slopes away from St Stephen's Church towards views that stretch across the Radnorshire hills, and honestly, that alone makes the trek worthwhile. This 15th-century church sits in the tiny village of Old Radnor, a few miles south of Presteigne, and it's the sort of place where you'll have the place largely to yourself.

Inside, it's all vaulted ceiling and carved roof bosses - proper medieval work. The font's a chunky Norman number that's been doing its job since the 12th century, and there's stained glass that catches the light beautifully on a clear day. It's not flashy, but it doesn't need to be. The real appeal is the quiet and the sense that you're stepping into something that's been here for centuries while the world rushed past outside.

Practically speaking, it's free to wander in during daylight hours, and you won't need more than 30 minutes unless you're the type who reads every memorial plaque. The churchyard itself is worth lingering in - the views south towards Radnor Forest are genuinely good, especially in evening light.

It slots nicely into a Mid Wales trip based around Presteigne. If you're staying at Presteigne Holiday Park just down the road, or heading towards Hush Hush Glamping or Rockbridge Park, this is an easy detour that won't steal your whole afternoon. Best visited when it's dry - the graveyard gets a bit boggy otherwise.
