St Sampson's Church

The church sits in Cricklade, just outside Swindon, and it's one of those proper Saxon buildings that makes you realize how old England actually is. St Sampson's has been standing since around the 7th century - which means it was already ancient when the Normans showed up. The stone walls are thick, the windows small and deep-set, and there's a real sense of weight and age about the place that modern buildings just don't manage.

Inside, the arcade of columns and the cruciform layout tell their own story. You're looking at genuine medieval carpentry in the roof timbers and the kind of stonework that's been patched and repointed a thousand times over. It's not flashy - there's no gold leaf or elaborate decoration - but that's rather the point. This is a working parish church that's been quietly getting on with its job for over a thousand years.

History buffs will find this genuinely worthwhile, though families with young children might struggle unless they're the type keen on exploring old churches. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour to look around properly. It's free to visit, though the doors aren't always unlocked - best to check locally in Cricklade or ring ahead if you're making a special trip.

If you're staying at Hoburne Cotswold or Second Chance Touring, it's a quick drive over and combines well with a walk along the Thames Path. Cricklade itself is a pleasant market town with decent pubs, so you could easily make a half-day of it.
