The wetland channels that cut through St Richards Open Space are surprisingly good for spotting birds, even if you're not a twitcher with a clipboard. Walking the paths on a quiet morning, you'll catch mallards, herons, and if you're lucky, something rarer picking through the reeds. It's essentially a restored wetland reserve just outside Broadway, and the whole thing takes about an hour to properly explore.

This is a working nature reserve rather than a manicured attraction, which means paths can get boggy and views aren't always dramatic from the walking trails. But that's actually the appeal - it feels genuine, not set up for Instagram. Families with young kids might find an hour enough before they get restless, though bird enthusiasts could easily spend longer with binoculars. Naturalists and photographers do well here too.

Since it's outside Broadway, which has those decent holiday parks at Leedons and Broadway Park & Holiday, you can easily build this into a broader day trip without it feeling like a major detour. The Cotswolds are close by if you want something more dramatic afterwards. Admission is straightforward - no faffing about with ticket offices - and it costs nothing to wander the paths. Go early for the best light and the most active wildlife. Midday in summer can feel a bit thin on action.
