St. Peter & St. Paul Church, Warsop

The church sits quietly at the heart of Warsop village, about four miles north of Mansfield, and you'll find it's far more interesting than the grey stone exterior suggests. St. Peter & St. Paul is largely medieval - the tower dates from the 14th century - and inside there's decent carved woodwork, some proper old glass, and the kind of detail that rewards a slow walk around the aisles. The chancel has been mucked about with over the centuries but retains character.

Warsop itself is small and unpretentious, which means the church doesn't get rammed with coach parties. That's actually brilliant if you want a genuine ten-minute poke around without crowds. Families won't find it thrilling unless the kids are already keen on medieval architecture - there's no interactive stuff or cafe - but history buffs doing the Sherwood Forest circuit will appreciate the peaceful setting and a chance to see how ordinary villages maintained their churches.

You can combine a visit with the nearby holiday parks - Sherwood Pines Camping is only 3.7 miles away and gets decent reviews - and it's handily placed if you're basing yourselves at Clumber Park or Center Parcs Sherwood Forest just down the road. The church appears to be open during reasonable daylight hours, though calling ahead is wise. Admission should be free or a small donation box. Allow half an hour maximum unless you're doing a serious architectural survey. Honest truth: it's a genuine old church rather than a showstopper, but that's rather the appeal.
