St Peter & Paul's Church, Bolton-by-Bowland

The churchyard sits on a gentle slope overlooking Bolton-by-Bowland, a proper rural corner of Lancashire that feels properly removed from things. St Peter & Paul's is a medieval church - fifteenth century mostly - with that solid, no-nonsense Yorkshire stone construction that weathers grey and beautiful over centuries.

Inside, the real draw is the carved misericords beneath the choir seats. They're quirky, sometimes crude, occasionally bawdy - the sort of medieval humour that makes you realise people five hundred years ago were just as inclined to sneak a bit of cheeky relief into their church furniture. The church itself is intimate without being cramped, and there's enough carved detail to keep history types occupied for a good half-hour.

Walkers will love this. The church sits at the edge of proper fell country, with Pendle Hill looming nearby and the Ribble Valley spreading out below. The walk down from Clitheroe is straightforward, or you can use it as a waypoint on a longer ramble. Allow an hour for the church itself plus however long you want to soak in the views.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Calder Farm is barely half a mile away - it's absolutely worth the short drive or walk. Admission is typically free (though do check ahead), and there's usually someone about to unlock if you arrive and find the door shut. Quiet, genuine, no fuss. That's the appeal here.
