Beacon Hill

The walk up Beacon Hill from Clitheroe takes about forty minutes if you're reasonably fit, and the payoff is a proper panoramic view across the Ribble Valley. The peak itself isn't dramatic - it's a grassy fell rather than a rocky outcrop - but that's rather the point. On a clear day you can see across to Pendle Hill, and the rolling moorland stretches out in every direction.

It's free to walk, obviously, and the route from town is straightforward enough. The terrain gets steep in places and can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter more than you'd think. Allow two hours there and back if you're stopping to admire the view, which you will.

This is ideal for walkers based at any of the nearby parks - Calder Farm is barely two miles away if you want camping pods or caravans, while Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site sits at just over four miles. Families with younger kids might find the slog up tedious, but teenagers who aren't completely phone-addicted tend to enjoy it. There's nothing to do at the summit itself - no cafe, no facilities - so come prepared with water and snacks.

The real value is fitting it into a wider ramble around the area. It works well as a morning walk before exploring Clitheroe town itself, or as part of a longer loop if you've got the legs for it. Worth doing if you're staying locally, though it's not the sort of destination you'd drive across Lancashire specially to tick off.
