St. Peter Church, Buckland Tout-Saints

St. Peter Church, Buckland Tout-Saints, is one of those quietly brilliant Devon churches that hardly anyone talks about - which is precisely why it's worth the detour from Kingsbridge.

Inside, the real treasure is the rood screen. It's a proper medieval piece, carved with enough detail to keep you studying it for a good twenty minutes. The chancel's worth a look too, though the church does feel a bit sparse compared to some of its showier neighbours. There's no gift shop, no entry fee that I could find - you just walk in and have a poke around.

It's ideal for anyone doing a slow loop around South Devon who appreciates old churches without the tourist crush. Families might spend thirty minutes here if the kids are interested in medieval carvings; solo walkers and history types will linger longer. The churchyard itself is pleasant for a breather, and you get views across the village.

If you're staying at Start Bay Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Wilton Farm just down the road, this makes a sensible morning stop before heading into Kingsbridge proper. Don't expect a grand day out - this is a brief, genuine encounter with a working medieval church that's been here since the 1300s. That's the appeal.
