St Paul's Church, Irton

The red sandstone walls of St Paul's Church catch the light beautifully on a clear day, rising out of the Cumbrian landscape near Holmrook with the kind of solid permanence that makes you feel small. Built in 1840, this is Victorian Gothic at its most straightforward - no elaborate frills, just good honest proportions and that distinctive local stone that weathers to a warm russet colour.

Inside, the church is refreshingly simple. You'll spot proper craftsmanship in the woodwork and stonework if you look, though it's the kind of place where a ten-minute wander feels complete rather than leaving you wanting more.

Walkers on the longer routes between Holmrook and the fells use this as a landmark and a rest point. It's not a destination in itself unless you're seriously into Victorian rural churches, but if you're staying at Fisherground Campsite nearby, it's worth the short drive to stretch your legs and peek inside. The churchyard itself is peaceful, with views toward the surrounding countryside that explain why someone bothered building something this proper out here.
