St Patrick's Church, Wallington

The churchyard sits quietly off the main drag in Wallington, and St Patrick's is exactly the sort of Victorian-era church you stumble upon by accident while exploring Surrey villages. Built in the 1860s, it's got that satisfying red-brick solidity that characterises so many English parish churches of the period - nothing flashy, just honest stonework and proper proportions.

Inside, there's genuine charm. The stained glass does its job without being showy, and the nave feels intimate rather than grand. It's the kind of place where you can actually sit quietly for ten minutes without feeling rushed. Families with kids will find it fine for twenty minutes or so - there's space to move around the churchyard - but they won't be entertained for hours. Proper church enthusiasts and anyone interested in Victorian architecture will get more from it. No admission fee, as far as I could establish, though opening times aren't always guaranteed, so best check before you make a special trip.
