St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas is a proper medieval church sitting in Sussex, just outside Chichester - one of those solid Norman structures that's been quietly doing its job for about nine centuries. The stone walls have that particular shade of grey you only get from genuine age, and inside there's the usual reward for church explorers: original features, decent windows, and the sort of peace that makes you forget the car park exists.

Walkers benefit most here. If you're rambling through the Sussex countryside between Chichester and the South Downs, this is exactly the kind of stop that makes a decent half-day loop feel worthwhile. You won't need more than thirty minutes inside unless you're properly into ecclesiastical architecture, but the setting rewards a slow approach - the churchyard's got character, and the walk to reach it beats sitting in Chichester town centre.

Historically minded types will find genuine Norman work and later additions that chart several centuries of repairs and modifications. It's not going to blow anyone's mind, but it reads like a proper village church rather than a museum piece.
