St Nicholas Church, Durham (St Nics)

St Nicholas Church sits right in the heart of Durham city centre, and it's one of those places locals barely register but visitors absolutely should. The church itself is a proper medieval beauty - all Norman arches and soaring stonework that makes you crane your neck just to take it in properly. You can wander inside for free and spend a good twenty minutes absorbing the atmosphere, or just ten if you're pressed for time.

It's best for anyone interested in church architecture or medieval history, though families won't find it tedious - kids often enjoy spotting the carved details and working out how old everything is. The light streaming through the windows at mid-morning is particularly good for photography if that's your thing.

The real strength here is location. St Nics sits bang in the middle of Durham's old town, so you'll naturally pass it while exploring the cathedral and castle nearby. It breaks up a longer heritage walk nicely without demanding hours of your time. Pop in between other attractions rather than making a special trip just for this one.
