St Nicholas' Church, Cottesmore

The stone tower of St Nicholas' Church rises above Cottesmore village like it's been there forever - because it more or less has. This is proper medieval Rutland, the sort of place you stumble upon while wandering between Oakham and the quieter corners of the county.

Inside, the church holds some genuinely interesting bits. The chancel's got some decent medieval work, and if you're into that sort of thing, there are wall paintings that survived centuries of whitewash and neglect. The whole building's got that lived-in feel - not museum-like, just a working parish church that happens to be very old.

It's frankly brilliant for anyone who enjoys doing the slow walk around English villages, ticking off churches as they go. History types will find enough to occupy twenty minutes; families with kids might manage ten before restlessness sets in. There's no great draw beyond the building itself, so don't expect visitor facilities or lengthy displays.

The village itself is small and quiet - no tea shop or pub to anchor your visit, but that's rather the point. You're after the church, the walk around the green, and the chance to feel like you've actually left the tourist trail.
