St Nectan's Waterfall

The water doesn't just fall here - it hammers down through a granite amphitheatre like something from a landscape painter's fever dream. St Nectan's Waterfall sits inland from Bodmin, tucked into a valley where the stream has carved its way through woodland for centuries, and you'll genuinely catch your breath when you round the final bend and see it properly.

It's a proper hike to get there - nothing gruelling, but the path is uneven and wet underfoot even in dry weather, so decent boots matter. The waterfall itself drops about 60 feet into a pool surrounded by ferns and moss-covered boulders. There's a hermitage carved into the rock face just above the cascade, which dates back to the 5th century and adds something genuinely historic to what could otherwise be just another waterfall photo stop.

Walkers will get real value from this one. It's the kind of place that rewards an hour's poking about - scrambling up the side paths, peering into the cave, feeling properly immersed in something wild. Kids tend to love it if they're old enough to manage the terrain without being carried the whole way. Summer brings crowds, especially weekends, so go midweek or early morning if you can.
