St Milburga

The church itself is modest - a squat stone building that doesn't announce itself loudly along the lane near Shifnal. But step inside and you're in the presence of something genuinely old. St Milburga's dates back to Saxon times, though what you see now is mostly medieval rebuild. The real draw for most visitors is the saint herself. Milburga was a 7th-century abbess, and her shrine sits here, making this a proper pilgrimage site for those interested in Anglo-Saxon spirituality.

The interior is calm and a bit austere - no over-the-top Victorian fiddling has spoilt it. There's real character in the stonework and the light through old glass. You'll spend maybe thirty minutes here if you're genuinely interested in the history; less if you're just passing through. Families with older kids who can appreciate medieval churches will get something from it, but young children might find it a touch dull.
