Royal Air Force Museum Midlands

The RAF Museum Midlands sits just outside Shifnal and is genuinely absorbing if you've got even a passing interest in military aviation. You're walking through decades of British air force history - actual aircraft that flew in combat, not just replicas gathering dust behind velvet ropes. The hangars are cavernous, filled with everything from Spitfires to fast jets, and the detail work on restoration is impressive enough that you'll find yourself reading plaques you didn't plan to read.

It's a solid day out for families, though you'll want to manage expectations with younger kids - there's not much hands-on stuff, so five-year-olds might lose interest after a couple of hours. Teenagers and adults who like engineering, history, or anything that goes fast will happily spend three to four hours here. The museum is free to enter, which makes it exceptional value.

Staffordshire's got some decent camping nearby if you're basing yourself in the area. Worfe Camping is the closest at 2.5 miles and highly rated, while Ted's Farm and Oakland Holiday Park are both solid alternatives within five miles - useful if you're planning a longer stay and want to explore the wider region. The museum sits well as part of a weekend exploring Shropshire and the West Midlands more broadly, though it's perfectly fine as a standalone visit from Shifnal itself. Allow three hours minimum, more if you're thorough.
