RAF Museum Midlands

The RAF Museum Midlands sits just outside Shifnal in Staffordshire, and it's one of those places that surprises you with how much there actually is to see. Walking through the hangars, you're surrounded by genuine aircraft - Vulcans, Lightnings, Harriers - the sort of machines that defined British aviation. The scale of some of them hits you properly; standing under a Victor bomber makes you understand why pilots needed nerves of steel.

It's genuinely excellent for families with kids old enough to engage with the subject matter. Under-fives will find it a bit abstract - a lot of standing around looking at metal - but from about seven or eight onwards, children usually get properly absorbed. The interactive elements help, though fair warning: it's not a theme park. This is serious aviation history, presented straightforwardly.

Allow at least three hours, longer if you're the sort who reads every panel. Many sections are indoors, which makes it a solid rainy-day option. History buffs and engineering types will lose entire afternoons here. The aircraft collection is genuinely significant - not just static display stuff, but machines with proper operational stories.

If you're camping at Worfe Camping or Ted's Farm just down the road, the museum makes an easy half-day outing. Oakland Holiday Park is also within spitting distance. The location works well as part of a wider Staffordshire break - gives you something substantive to do without needing to travel far from your pitch.
