St Michael's Church

The church sits quietly on the edge of Horncastle, a medieval wool town that's seen better days but still has proper character. St Michael's is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a substantial parish church with a tower that commands respect, built when the town was flush with money from the cloth trade.

Inside, it's all high ceilings and stone work, the kind of Anglican interior that feels lived-in rather than museum-like. There are some decent monuments and brasses if you're into that sort of thing, and the proportions give you a real sense of what mattered to people five centuries ago. The tower is worth looking at from outside - it's got proper presence.

It won't take you long. An hour maximum, including a wander round the churchyard if you fancy it. Free to enter, as most parish churches are, though you might want to leave a quid in the box. Go on a weekday morning if you can - fewer people, better light through the windows, and you get the place more or less to yourself.

If you're staying at any of the caravan parks within a few miles - Tattershall Lakes or Willow Holt are closest - this makes sense as a 20-minute detour while exploring Horncastle proper. Don't expect fireworks, but it's the real thing: a working medieval church in a real market town, not a postcard version of one.
