St Michael's Church

The church sits on a modest rise just outside Sheerness, all flint and stone with a tower that's been keeping watch over the Isle of Sheppey for centuries. St Michael's is the kind of place you wander into half by accident while exploring the quieter corners of Kent, and it's worth the detour if you've got an hour to spare.

Inside, there's a proper medieval atmosphere - low wooden beams, wonky floors that creak under your feet, and enough carved stones to keep history buffs occupied. The chancel's the real draw, with its medieval features largely intact despite everything the years have thrown at it. It's not vast or showy, which is rather the point. You get the feeling this church actually belongs here, not plonked down for the tourists.

This works best for walkers and anyone with a genuine interest in medieval architecture. Kids will last about twenty minutes unless they're the sort who get excited about old gravestones. The churchyard itself is pleasant enough for a wander, and Sheerness is close enough for refreshments if you need them.

Free entry, open during daylight hours typically, though it's worth checking locally since opening times aren't always advertised.
