St Michael in Lewes Church, Lewes

The church sits right in the heart of Lewes, its tower poking up through the town's higgledy-piggledy roofline like something that's watched over the place for centuries. Which it has - St Michael's dates back to the medieval period, and stepping inside feels like walking into actual history rather than reading about it.

The interior is all high ceilings and proper old stone work. There's stained glass that catches the light properly, and the kind of peaceful quiet you rarely find in town centres these days. The chancel's worth a look, and if you're into medieval architecture rather than just taking a selfie, there's enough detail here to spend a good half hour poking about.

It's free to wander in during daylight hours, which is generous considering how well-maintained the place is. Families with older kids will get something from it - the architecture teaches without lecturing. Younger ones might get restless after ten minutes, to be honest.

Worth timing it for a visit while you're exploring Lewes itself, which deserves a proper afternoon anyway. The castle's just up the hill, the town's got good independent shops and cafes, and there's decent walking along the Ouse valley if the weather's behaving. If you're camping at The Secret Campsite nearby, you're perfectly placed to call in on an evening before it gets dark. Don't make it a pilgrimage destination on its own, but as part of a Lewes day out it's absolutely worth the walk up to the door.
