St Matthew's Church

St Matthew's Church sits in the quiet countryside just outside Builth Wells, a proper local landmark that most visitors to the area walk straight past. It's a modest stone building with genuine character - the kind of place where you'll find yourself the only person there on a weekday afternoon, which is rather the point. The interior holds some decent Victorian work alongside older bones, and there's that particular silence you only get in small rural churches where the next service might be weeks away.

This isn't a destination in itself, honestly. It's a break-in-the-walk sort of place. If you're camping at Penmaenau Farm or Celtic Woodland - both within spitting distance - and you fancy a twenty-minute leg-stretch with a bit of local history, it's worth knowing about. The churchyard itself is pleasant enough for a wander, and you'll get a genuine sense of how communities were built around these places long before anyone thought about camping pods.

Walkers tackling routes around Builth Wells will stumble across it naturally. Families with older kids interested in architecture or rural Wales might find it mildly interesting for ten minutes. Younger children will likely find it dull unless they're the type who enjoy graveyards, which some absolutely do.
