St Matthew's Church, Little Lever.

A rather handsome Victorian church sits quietly in Little Lever, just outside Bury, doing what it's done since 1870 - providing a solid focal point for the village and a proper example of 19th-century church architecture. St Matthew's is red brick with decent stonework details, the kind of building that rewards a closer look if you're walking through the area.

The interior is where things get interesting. You've got good Victorian fittings and windows that tell you something about the congregation's confidence in the era it was built. If you're into ecclesiastical architecture or just appreciate the craftsmanship of the period, it's worth stepping inside. Fair warning though - like most village churches, opening times can be a bit variable, so phone ahead or catch the doors open on a Sunday service.

This isn't a destination in itself, to be honest. What it is, though, is a solid reason to spend an hour exploring Little Lever on foot if you're staying at nearby Burrs Country Park. The park sits just 4.4 miles away and makes a decent base for exploring North West Lancashire. The church works well as part of a broader wander - you get a feel for how Victorian mill villages developed, and St Matthew's sits right at the heart of that story.
