St Matthew's Church

The red stone of St Matthew's rises up quite suddenly as you walk through Rossendale's older streets - Victorian Gothic done properly, without the fuss. Built in the 1870s when the town was booming on cotton money, it's got that solid Lancashire confidence about it.

Inside, the real draw is the stained glass and the sheer verticality of the nave. High ceilings, proper stonework, and enough brass plaques to tell you half the town's history was buried here. The choir stalls are worth a proper look if you're into Victorian craftsmanship. It's not one of those churches that takes hours - twenty minutes to wander round and you've seen what there is to see.

Historically minded types will get more from a visit than most, especially if you're interested in industrial Lancashire and how the money flowed back into architecture. Families with older kids who don't mind standing about are fine; young children will get restless quick enough.
