St Matthew

St Matthew sits on the edge of Wigton, a proper little stone church that's easy to walk past if you're not paying attention. The real draw here is the interior - it's got some genuinely good Victorian glass and the sort of quiet, no-fuss atmosphere you don't find much anymore.

If you're into church architecture or stained glass, you'll spend a good twenty minutes poking around. Everyone else will probably manage ten. It's not a showstopper like some of the bigger Lakeland churches, but it's worth the detour if you're already in town or staying at one of the nearby parks.

The practical bit: it's free to wander in, though opening hours aren't brilliantly signposted - your best bet is turning up during daylight and hoping. Most days it's accessible, but don't count on guided tours or any fuss.

For a park holiday in the area, this works as a gentle morning activity before heading to North Lakes Country Park, which is only a couple of miles down the road. If you're based at Stanwix Park further out, it's less essential - you'd only bother if you're actively seeking out local churches. Fair to say it's more of a fill-in-the-gaps attraction than a main event. Wigton itself has a decent market square and a few decent cafes, so combine it with a proper mooch around town and you've got half a decent morning sorted.
