St. Mary’s, Inverness

The red sandstone tower of St. Mary's rises above Inverness like a Victorian exclamation mark, impossible to miss as you walk through the town centre. Built in the 1880s, this Episcopal cathedral commands attention with its soaring spire and ornate Gothic Revival detailing - it's the sort of building that makes you actually look up from your phone.

Inside, the space feels properly grand. High vaulted ceilings, stained glass that catches the light just right, and that particular hush you get in old churches. It's active and still used for services, which gives it a lived-in quality rather than museum stuffiness. You can wander round at your own pace, and there's enough architectural detail to keep you occupied for twenty minutes or so - longer if you're into Victorian stonework.

This works well as a quick stop while exploring Inverness itself rather than a destination on its own. History types will appreciate the craftsmanship; everyone else gets a proper sense of Highland Victorian grandeur. Free to enter, though opening hours depend on services and events, so check ahead before making a special trip.
