St Mary's Church, Worsbrough

The church sits on a rise above Worsbrough village, stone walls weathered to that particular grey you see across South Yorkshire. St Mary's dates back centuries - it's the kind of place where you can spend ten minutes or an hour depending on how much you care about medieval masonry and Victorian restorations.

Inside, there's genuine atmosphere. The nave feels properly old, and if you're into church architecture you'll find things worth looking at - though I won't pretend every corner is remarkable. It's best visited as part of a walk around the village rather than a standalone trip. The graveyard's pleasant enough for a wander, the kind of place where families with children can stretch their legs without things getting dull too quickly.

It's free to visit, naturally, and you can usually get in during daylight hours. The real appeal comes if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks - Greensprings or Broad Close Farm are within easy reach - and want something to do on a morning before heading into Barnsley proper or exploring the wider area. History enthusiasts will get more from it than most, but it's the sort of church that rewards even a casual 20-minute stop. No café attached, no gift shop nonsense, just a working parish church that's been standing for longer than most of us will.

Don't expect a spectacle. Do expect something genuine.
